Did you know that the modern asphalt used in roads was invented by the Belgian professor Edward J. De Smedt?

Modern asphalt was used for the first time in 1870 for William Street in Newark (New Jersey). Subsequently, De Smedt invented a variant. This variant was first used in 1872 to cover Battery Park and Fifth Avenue in New York.
