Together with chips and beer, chocolate is a gourmet speciality in Belgium. In 2012, there were 500 chocolatiers and 2,000 chocolate shops in Belgium (which is one for every 5,500 inhabitants).  Belgians consume an average of 8 kilos of chocolate per person annually, one of the highest rates in the world. Belgium produces almost 220,000 tons of chocolate every year, most of which is destined for export, making it a symbol of Belgian quality worldwide.
