In Belgium, compulsory education applies to all children of compulsory school age, domiciled or resident in Belgium, regardless of status (ref. Law of 29 June 1983 on compulsory education). The child is subject to compulsory education for a period of twelve years beginning in the academic year that starts in the year the child reaches the age of 6 and ending at the end of the academic year during which the child reaches the age of 18.

The compulsory education period is made up of two parts, one full-time and one part-time period.
