Did you know that a Belgian is the European champion of the mullet cut?

Belgians have launched an unusual event: the first European mullet festival took place in May 2019. And at the second event which was held in the Creuse region in France, the Belgian Nicolas Vanderkelen became the new European champion.

Featuring short hair at the front and longer hair at the back, the mullet was particularly popular between the 1970s and the 1990s. Nowadays, it is considered old-fashioned and in poor taste. However, this MacGyver-style haircut is gradually making a comeback.

Some fans of this hair style, who have joined together in the non-profit association "Les amis de la coupe mulet" (The friends of the mullet), have decided to honour it by organising an unusual event. The result was the first European mullet festival, which took place on Saturday 18 May 2019 in Boussu, Hainaut province.

As in 2019, nostalgic or self-deprecating fans came together to celebrate the mullet. There was plenty of humour, with a range of different activities such as rock concerts, a competition for the most beautiful mullet and a hairdressing workshop for those brave enough to take the plunge. The Belgian lorry driver, elected European champion by applause, has been a fan of the mullet cut for 20 years and sports a long curly brown mullet which made all the difference.

However, this is not the first event of its kind in the world. In February 2018, the Mulletfest was held in the small town of Kurri Kurri, Australia, giving some 150 mullet fans an opportunity to show off their beautiful manes.
