The recently renovated Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens (MDD) is showing off two exhibitions with notable artists as it reopens to the public.

Once upon a time, a Belgian business power couple – Jan Andries and Lieve Vanlouwe -- collected paintings of the most desirable artists, from national prides like Léon Spilliaert and René Magritte to foreign geniuses such as Rothko and Richter. The couple have been key figures of the museum and are now honoured with a new pavilion in their name, and the brunt of the works in the new “Eloquent Formalism” exhibition comes from the couple’s collection.

Other noteworthy Belgians shining in this exhibition are Luc Tuymans, Dan Van Severen, Koen van den Broek, Hilde Van Sumere and Marthe Wéry.

“The collection reflects the belief in a deeply rooted democratic and open-minded idea of art,” according to the museum

At the same time, MDD is running a dialogue between the works of three renowned artists, namely Blinky Palermo, Robert Grosvenor, and Belgium’s own Luc Tuymans.

A fantastic occasion to (re-)discover this recently renovated museum in Sint-Martens-Latem, just outside Ghent.
