Painting After Painting, an exhibition of contemporary artworks in Ghent

04 April 2025 - 02 November 2025
Ghent

The Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art (S.M.A.K.) in Ghent is showing works by as many as 74 contemporary young artists living and working in Belgium.

This group exhibition of works by those 74 artists from Belgium refutes the axiom that the art of painting is dead. Judging by the evolutions and trends on display in their works, one can only conclude that the art scene in Belgium is actually brimming with health. Each artist is pursuing their own path. One of them builds on the motifs and techniques of earlier generations, but is exploring and slowly testing the boundaries of the medium. Another of the artists depicts subjects such as everyday life, social, political and ethical issues, while one of the others chooses to make use of abstract or formalist expression and is exploring how painting relates to other contemporary forms of visual production. In any case, the result is a rich, variegated and complex collection of works that is far removed from the assumption that painting is now a thing of the past.

So why not pick up a paintbrush yourself if you get the chance? While the exhibition is under way, you can actually do just that in Room 1 of the S.M.A.K. as an individual visitor, in a group or as part of a school visit. Celebrate your creativity to the max! Groups and schools can actually book guided interactive workshops with or without an inspiring guided tour.
