A new art biennial launched in Belgium

Deep in the Belgian province of Hainaut, in the municipality of Molenbaix on the outskirts of Celles, lies an eight-hectare estate that will set the scene for a new contemporary art fest.

Enter: the BUTOR biennial, a three- to four-kilometre experience with works by Belgian and international contemporary artists, putting to excellent use the Ferme d’Écavée and its property, which includes a chapel, a barn and a lake. Various works were made especially for this first edition of a promising art event.

From August to October, BUTOR will explore the tension between two perceptions of the countryside: from the picturesque ideal and the association with rest and relaxation to the harsh realities of an ever-changing landscape that evolves with the seasons, inhabitants and goings-on.

Belgian visual artists include Maëlle Dufour, Xavier Mary, and Marjorie Van Den Hauwe. They are just three out of twenty nationally and internationally renowned creative spirits.
