Jazz Weekend in Brussels
On the last weekend in May, the former Brussels Jazz Marathon, the BRU JAZZ WE (Brussels Jazz Weekend) will bring Brussels to life with a combination of jazz, blues and funk, with a sprinkling of world music. It will offer three days of celebration by the best Belgian groups and international stars! Performances will take place outside, on five open-air stages in the most beautiful city centre squares, and inside, in more than 80 clubs, cafes and hotels.
An Aperitif evening will open the event on Place Luxembourg on Thursday 24 May. This year's Brussels Jazz Weekend will be a musical reflection of the capital and its diversity. From Downtown to Uptown Brussels, the organisers have tried to distinguish areas with distinct sounds and personalities.
Street bands and one-man bands will form a musical link between the different hotspots, creating a route through the city that culminates in a big Brass Band Battle on Place Rogier. Visitors can experience jazz in all its forms, from Swing to Hip hop in the Skatepark des Ursulines. On Friday evening, the female singers BJ Scott and guests will pay tribute to legendary artists such as Billie Holiday and Nina Simone in a unique concert on the Grand-Place entitled "The Southern Blues-Jazz Revue". Philip Catherine and DELV!S will play on the Grand-Place on Saturday evening. Throughout the weekend, these well-known Belgian artists will play alongside talented youngsters such as those from the XL-Jazz contest.
During the day, the Bru Jazz Kids will run introductions to jazz and dance on Place Sainte-Catherine. This family-friendly atmosphere will extend into the afternoon with Bru Jazz Jive, providing a space for dancing swing or lindy-hop under the supervision of the Brussels Swing Dance Club.
