La Monnaie in Brussels awarded "Best Opera House” for 2024

Belgium can be proud of this award; La Monnaie theatre has received the OPER! Awards 2024 in the “Best Opera House of the Year” category. This award places the institution among the best opera houses in the world.

Under the general and artistic direction of Peter de Caluwe for over 20 years, La Monnaie has always stood out for its creativity, innovation and international outlook. These are the primary reasons for La Monnaie winning this award.

After more than five centuries of history, numerous renovations and, above all, worldwide successes, La Monnaie theatre is now an opera house that is more and more contemporary in order to attract a wide range of generations, including the very young.

This prestigious prize also marks the end of a fine career for Peter de Caluwe, who has brilliantly managed and directed La Monnaie theatre for many years. He will hand over the reins to the German Christina Scheppelman in July 2025 for a 6-year term. We wish her every success.

The awards ceremony will take place on 21 February 2025 at the La Monnaie theatre. Other categories will also be honored and rewarded.
