The Brand New Testament nominated at the Golden Globes
The Brand New Testament by Jaco van Dormael has just been nominated for the Golden Globes in the Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language category, competing against Mustang (France), Son of Saul (Hungary), The Club (Chile) and The Fence (Finland).
In The Brand New Testament, God exists. He is living in Brussels. He is horrible to his wife and daughter. There is much talk of his son, but very little about his daughter, Ea (Pili Groyne), aged 10. To take her revenge on her father, she decides to send a text message to everyone giving them the date of their death... And so begins a chase between Father and daughter...
Universally acclaimed, the film won two awards at Sitgès, at the 48th International Fantastic Film Festival, considered as the most important of its kind. The film received the Méliès d’argent for the Best European Film as well as the award for Best Actress presented to the young Brussels actress Pili Groyne, whose talent had already been appreciated in the films Deux jours, une nuit by the Dardenne brothers and Alleluia by Fabrice Du Welz.
With over two million admissions, The Brand New Testament is the third highest grossing film of all time for a French Belgian film in Belgium. Its nomination at the Golden Globes is encouraging, particularly for the race to the Oscars where The Brand New Testament has been chosen as the Belgian candidate for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
