'Best Local Beer' awards small-scale Walloon breweries

21/06/2018

The 'Best Belgian Beer of Wallonia' competition has had a rebranding, and is now the 'Best Local Beer' competition. With this rebranding, the biennial competition intends to put the local character of Walloon beers even more in the spotlight abroad. 119 beers underwent a bling tasting test by 45 members of the jury. One of the major winners this year was 'Diôle' from the Hainault-based brewery Brasserie des Carrières.

It is not the first time that Brasserie des Carrières has won awards. Four years ago, their blond beer won the same competition, and the dark Diôle obtained the silver medal at the Brussels Beer Challenge in 2016. This recognition is a boost for the brewery, to further develop their brand. For example, the company intends to make the brewery more accessible, and they also plan to open a small tavern.

Rochefort, Chimay and Orval are obviously some of the most well-known Walloon beers. Through the Best Local Beer competition, Apaq-W, the Walloon agency for the promotion of quality agriculture, intends to bring the beers of smaller breweries into the limelight.
