Belgium to provide a new European Capital of Culture in 2030

29/06/2017

Following on from Mons, our country can once again make preparations for a European Capital of Culture. Exactly which Belgian city will receive this honour is as yet unknown.

Earlier this month, the European Parliament published a list of all the countries who can expect to have a European Capital of Culture over the period 2020-2033. Along with Cyprus, Belgium will provide a Capital of Culture in 2030. The concept started in 1985 to bring Europeans closer together, and enrich each other's culture. In exchange for the title, the selected cities organise a series of cultural events with a clear European dimension, for a whole year.

The Brussels Culture Council would naturally like to see our capital city chosen as European Capital of Culture in 2030. The necessary lobbying work is already well underway. The cities of Antwerp (1993), Brussels (2000), Bruges (2002) and Mons (2015) have all previously been European Capitals of Culture.
