The Belgians at the César Awards

15/02/2022

Once again this year, the billing for the Césars is studded with Belgian film stars.

Starting with the film with 15 nominations "Lost Illusions", an adaptation of the novel by Balzac, where we find Cécile de France nominated for best supporting actress and the young Salomé Dewaels in the best female newcomer category. The Belgian cinematographer, Christophe Beaucarne, is competing in the best photo category.

The film "The Restless", directed by the Belgian Joachim Lafosse, stands out thanks to its two French leading actors, Damien Bonnard and Leïla Bekhti, who interpret masterfully the daily life of a couple where the husband is bipolar. They have both been nominated in the category of best actor and best actress.

Virginie Efira, is vying for the César for best actress for her role in "Benedetta" by Paul Verhoeven. She plays Benedetta Carlini, a mystical nun in the 17th century who will be tried for her homosexuality.

It should also be noted that Pascaline Chavanne, the brilliant costume designer nominated in the category of best costumes for the rock opera "Annette", has already won this award for "Renoir" in 2014 and "An Officer and a Spy" in 2020. This rock opera is accompanied by an excellent soundtrack which has earned the Belgians Paul Heymans and Thomas Gauder a nomination for the best sound.

Let's hope that, with such a billing, Belgian cinema will distinguish itself with some well-deserved awards.
