Belgian artist featured at Ruhr Triennial

04/09/2024

Berlinde De Bruyckere, a Belgian artist known for her sculptures and installations, is featured in the latest Ruhr Triennial.

De Bruyckere, who was born in Ghent and has received various prizes and recognitions for her work, is exhibiting her series City of Refuge for the fourth time (past occurrences included the Venice Biennial). With every edition, she creates new sculptures, and the exhibition can be rediscovered within the context of its environment.

She explores the figures of angels in this exhibition, something not uncommon to her work. However, it is broader than that. “The field of inspiration,” De Bruyckere has said, “ranges from the ancient past through sources like the Bible, art history and mythology, to the distant past and present through sources like newspapers, cinema and performing arts.”

Did you know that Berlinde De Bruyckere was also involved in giving the Sint-Janshospitaal in Bruges a new look earlier this year, with a work named Reclining Arcangelo II?

Well done to this absolutely remarkable Belgian artist.
