Award-winning AR tour in Ghent's St Bavo's Cathedral is worth a try

Traditional visits to architectural and natural heritage sites still predominate in Belgium. However, a new dimension is gradually emerging: carefully selected innovative technologies, such as AR, which enhance the tourist experience. One example of this is the crypt containing the altarpiece of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb in St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent.

Just as a reminder: what is the difference between AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality)? VR generates a simulated reality via the computer, while AR manipulates the real world via holography but you can still recognise it as such. To put it briefly...

When properly applied, this technology propels visitors back in time, allowing them to view a building, monument, or work of art as if they were witnessing its creation. Combined with prior knowledge, this is the best way to optimise the cultural experience. And that is precisely what a visit to the world-famous Altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent has to offer. There are three versions to choose from, each tailored to a different level of knowledge: children will benefit most from the KIDS version, laypeople from the Standard version, and the experts will go for the Master of Detail version. While the latter two are available in nine languages, the first option is only available in English, French, and Dutch.

The Van Eyck brothers would have marvelled at the sight of such technical ingenuity in the 21st century and this crowning achievement.
