At the French Film Festival in Angoulême, 'Noces', by Belgian director Stephan Streker, won two awards. The French actors Lina El Arabi and Sébastien Houbani received the award for best actor and actress for their role as Zahira and Amir, a brother and sister who take a stand against the Pakistani family tradition. 'Noces' ('Marriage') tells the story of the pregnant 18-year-old Zahira who wants to keep her unborn baby at any cost, despite the pressures of her parents. With the help of her brother Amir, Zahira tries to fight for her rights.
'Noces' is the third feature film by the Brussels director Stephan Streker. He began his career as a boxing, cinema and football journalist, but directed his first own short film 'Shadow Boxing' in 1993. When Streker made his debut at the Montreal World Film Festival with 'Le monde nous appartient' in 2012, his movie career truly took off. 'Noces' seems to bring Streker further fame. The movie will be one of the movies representing our country during the Toronto International Film Festival. The general public, however, will have to wait until 2017 to see 'Noces' in the movie theatres.
