Imec, the first European incubator for start-ups
Imec, located in the suburbs of Leuven, has become a research centre specialising in nanotechnology and the development of electronic chips. And it is a globally recognised centre, one that has been using its experience to encourage the creation of start-ups for several years. UBI Global has ranked it the best in Europe for its booster activities.
UBI's World Benchmark Study uses more than 50 criteria to assess more than 1,500 programmes around the world. The final rankings reflect the global impact of each programme on the creation and development of start-ups.
"It is an extraordinary honour to be recognised by UBI Global as one of the best incubators linked to a university," said Sven De Cleyn, manager of the imec.istart programme, when it was announced that they were ranked fifth in the world (first in Europe). "We are committed to constantly improving our programme and we are proud that many of our imec.istart companies have registered strong growth, both locally and internationally, since the last rankings.
Some 60 businesses already claim to be "Made in imec", a trend that has been growing for two years now, since the creation of a team of ten people exclusively devoted to creating more new projects. But in addition to "simply" viable businesses, imec is primarily working to support the major players of the future in the field of nanotechnology. "We are currently working on several projects that have the potential to really take off in the future," stated Olivier Rousseaux, another programme manager.
World Benchmark Study (UBI) screent ruim 1.500 programma’s overal in de wereld op ruim 50 parameters. De eindrangschikking weerspiegelt de globale impact van elk programma op de oprichting en ontwikkeling van start-ups.
‘We zijn erg vereerd dat UBI Global ons erkent als een van de beste universiteitsincubatoren’, zei imec.istart program manager Sven De Cleyn, toen bekend werd dat ze 5e staan in de wereldtop (1e in Europa). ‘We proberen continu ons programma te optimaliseren en zijn trots dat, sinds de vorige ranking, heel wat van onze imec.istart-bedrijven fors gegroeid zijn, zowel lokaal als in het buitenland.’
Momenteel mogen zich al een zestigtal bedrijven made in Imec noemen. Die trend versnelt zelfs sinds twee jaar terug een team van een klein tiental mensen is opgericht dat zich uitsluitend erop toelegt nog meer nieuwe projecten uit de grond te stampen. Maar meer dan op ‘gewone’ levensvatbare bedrijven mikt Imec op de ondersteuning van de grote spelers van morgen op het vlak van nanotechnologie. ‘We werken vandaag aan meerdere projecten die morgen mogelijk uitgroeien tot eenhoornen’, doet Olivier Rousseaux, een andere program manager, er nog een schepje bovenop.
