Belgian pharma giant takes over US company
UCB, a Belgian pharmaceutical company has taken over Neurona Therapeutics, a US company, in a move to spearhead the fight against epilepsy with a new treatment.

The Belgian biopharma magnate UCB has always been keen on bettering the lives of those with epilepsy and is now hedging its bets on a potential regenerative cell therapy developed by the American biotech company Neurona. The therapy is centred around the stimulation of GABA, a neurotransmitter with an inhibitory function.
The acquisition allows UCB to branch into regenerative medicine and cell therapy, covering new ground, and the CEO has described it as the extension of a legacy that’s been over thirty years in the making.
UCB has a multitude of research and development centres all around the world, including two in Belgium and places a strong emphasis on innovation, whether that be in relation to the epilepsy community or beyond.
Congratulations to UCB in this major step forward. Another proof that Belgium is at the cutting edge of pharmaceutical progress.
