Belgian apples have India in their sights

24/03/2017

'Give your loved ones the juiciness of Belgian apples'. This slogan is intended to encourage Indians to buy and eat more Belgian apples. The BelOrta fruit and vegetable auctioneers have initiated a promotional campaign in six cities in India. Consumers and traders will be targeted in the coming months on social media, on advertising boards along roads, on TV, in shops, and in wholesale markets.

The campaign will be focused on six major cities: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Lucknow. Bollywood star Sonu Sood and Chef Ranveer Brar will help to put Belgian apples in the spotlight. India, the second most populous country in the world, is already a major consumer of Belgian apples. In 2016, Belgium exported around 10,000 tonnes to the country. The aim of the campaign is to further improve the market position of Belgian apples. India represents an alternative to the Russian market, where an embargo has been in place for several years for fruit and vegetables from the European Union.

BelOrta will receive support for the campaign from the Flemish government, VLAM (Flanders' Agricultural Marketing Board), SALK (Strategic Action Plan for Limburg Squared), the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Flanders Investment & Trade.
