75 years after his creation, Lucky Luke is more popular than ever
The lone cowboy, Lucky Luke, is the hero of a humorous series of western comics created by the Belgian cartoonist Morris. The man who shoots faster than his shadow has been our most popular cowboy for the past seventy-five years. His hilarious parodies of American myths have entered the pantheon of the imagination at the speed of a colt bullet and are still delighting readers today.
He has taken part in all the major events that marked how the West was won: the telegraph, the railroad, the Pony Express, the stagecoach, the Mississippi paddle steamers, the large caravans of pioneers, confrontations with the Indians, life in the military posts on the frontier, the gold and oil rushes. He has met legendary characters, all of whom really existed, including Calamity Jane, Jesse James, Billy the Kid and especially the Dalton brothers. In reality, there were three of them and they formed a famous group of outlaws, who struck in the Wild West between 1890 and 1892, mainly attacking banks and trains. Lucky Luke also met an even more unexpected character: the great tragic actress Sarah Bernhardt. This encounter "could have happened", since the Frenchwoman toured North America in 1912-13 and performed "Phèdre" in front of Texas audiences who did not speak a word of French. This example proves that Morris conscientiously researched the subjects of his stories. In 2002, Morris drew his 80th and last album: La légende de l’Ouest. Lucky Luke still rides Jolly Jumper, now drawn by Achdé. His latest adventures, published in 2021, take place in Mark Twain country where he fights against slavery in A Cowboy in High Cotton. He has also inspired cinema and television, animated films, artists, ... he has his own equestrian statue in Charleroi and earned his author several awards, including the gold medal from the World Health Organization, in 1988, for having replaced his character's cigarette with a piece of straw.
