Nafissatou Thiam has won the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in London. In doing so, she won Belgium's first ever golden medal in the athletics world championships. Thiam is now not only the reigning world champion but also the Olympic champion in the heptathlon.

After her success in taking a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Nafissatou Thiam has now conquered the world title in the heptathlon. In London the Belgian gathered a total of 6,784 points over the seven disciplines. This score was well ahead of Carolin Schäfer from Germany (6,696 points) and Anouk Vetter from the Netherlands (6,636 points). Thiam paved her way to victory with an amazing performance in the high jump, the long jump and the javelin.

With her world title Thiam also writes some new Belgian sporting history, being the first time Belgium has ever won a golden medal in the World Athletics Championships. Earlier this year this new star in international athletics amazed the world by exceeding 7,000 points at the meeting in Götzis, thus making the Belgian record that much more magnificent. Thiam, who also works as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF Belgium, seems to be well on her way to becoming the Belgian sportswoman of the year for the third time.
