Flower Carpet in Brussels named International Flower Event of the Year

19/03/2015

The so-called Flower Carpet in Brussels has won the award for ‘International Flower Event of the Year’ in Toronto, Canada. Every year the International Garden Tourism Awards honour the best initiatives in garden tourism all over the globe. The Flower Carpet was the international jury's favourite in the category ‘Flower Event’.

Every two years, over four days in August, the market square in Brussels is adorned with a gigantic flower carpet made entirely of begonias. In 2014, being the 50th anniversary of Turkish immigration to Belgium, the design was given a Turkish theme and was inspired by the geometric patterns in popular Turkish carpets.

Annette Katz, director of the Flower Carpet non-profit organisation, is over the moon with the award. “The unique contributions of all those concerned have allowed the Flower Carpet to become one of the most recognised and famous symbols of our capital city for people abroad. We are honoured and proud to receive this award, which recognises and values the work that is put in. The prize is a real reward for the skills of all our passionate team members. Not forgetting of course all the volunteers who come and help fill the colourful carpet, measuring 75 by 24 metres."

The next Flower Carpet can be admired between 12 and 16 August 2016.

In Brussels this year, from 13 to 16 August 2015, you can enjoy the second edition of Flowertime. During this period the city hall in Brussels will be transformed into an idyllic floral walk. The hall, corridors, offices, meeting rooms and reception areas will then all be decorated with tens of unique and amazing floral arrangements.
