Brussels Grand-Place among the top 25 landmarks

27/05/2016

The Grand-Place of Brussels was included in Tripadvisor's ranking of the top 25 landmarks in the world. The Grand-Place ranked 13th, before landmarks such as the Big Ben in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Acropolis in Athens and the Chinese Great Wall. The top 5 consists of: Machu Picchu (Peru), the Sheikh Zayed Mosque (United Arab Emirates), Angkor Wat (Cambodia), St Peter's Basilica (Vatican City) and the Taj Mahal (India).

The Grand-Place is in the centre of Brussels, the capital of Belgium and Europe. It is one of the most important sights to see for tourists visiting Brussels. The main eye catcher is the impressive 15th-century Gothic town hall. Several guild houses line the square, forming a rich mixture of renaissance and baroque elements.

The original functions of the market as a commercial, political and socio-cultural centre have decreased more and more or even disappeared. Now it is mostly an important centre for tourists, which can be seen in the many cafes, terraces, restaurants and hotels. The only product still sold on the market itself, are flowers. Each summer there is a large flower event, alternating between Brussels Flowers and the Carpet of Flowers. Regularly concerts or other events take place here, such as the Ommegang, the Christmas Market and the Maypole Procession.

The market square is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful market squares in Europe: all four sides are magnificently maintained. Since 1998 the Grand-Place is on the Unesco World Heritage List.
