Belgian Cats make Belgian sporting history

04/07/2017

The Belgian Cats, the national women's basketball team, have won the bronze medal at the European Championships in the Czech Republic. This is the very first time in the history of Belgian basketball.

The Belgian Cats had already demonstrated that they were capable of great things when they beat Russia, the basketball superpower, with a score of 75-76. Similarly, Montenegro and Latvia were unable to stand in their way during the group trials, which immediately earned Belgium a place in the quarter-final. A win against Italy in the quarter-final not only secured their place in the semi-final, but also meant historic participation in the basketball world championships. 76-66 for Belgium was the final score after a most thrilling match. Even this was not the end of terrific times for the Belgian Cats. Although Spain turned out to be a touch too strong in the semi-final, the women won their way to a bronze medal by convincingly beating Greece with a score of 78-45.

It is Belgium's first ever medal in an international basketball tournament. Meanwhile, the Red Flames, Belgium's female footballers, are preparing themselves for a European championship, to be held in the Netherlands this summer. We can't wait to see whether they can rise to the challenge like our Belgian Cats.
