For the second year running, the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) has been named the most innovative university in Europe. The ranking, carried out by the press agency Thomson Reuters, presents the 100 most innovative universities in Europe in 2017.

This year, and for the second time, the University of Leuven has been awarded the title. Overall, the Thomson Reuters group takes account of ten parameters when drawing up this ranking. Among these criteria, KU Leuven is the establishment that publishes the most scientific articles and applies for the most patents in Europe. Also, many inventions developed by the University of Leuven are cited by external researchers in their own patent applications.

"KU Leuven is one of the most important research and development institutes in the world. In 2015, its R&D spending exceeded €454 million and its patents portfolio currently contains 586 patent families, each of which represents an invention protected in several countries," explains Thomson Reuters. Second place was awarded to Imperial College London, with Cambridge University named as the third most innovative university.
