Brussels one of the safest airports in Europe

One year after the attacks in Brussels, Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport, has reaffirmed that the airport is now one of the safest in Europe. Safety measures were comprehensively reassessed after the fateful day of 22 March 2016.

Brussels Airport and Maelbeek metro station were both struck during the attacks a year ago. Today, the CEO of Brussels Airport emphasises the fact that the situation has evolved positively in terms of security. He claims that the safety of the airport has been improved in numerous areas, in particular through the deployment of around 100 additional police officers around the site. In addition, these officers have been specially trained in new working methods, including, for example, identifying suspicious behaviour. The number of surveillance cameras has also been increased. Before the attacks, there were around 1,000 cameras within the airport perimeter. There are now more than 1,200.

Arnaud Feist has confirmed that Brussels is now one of the safest airports in Europe. In addition to the surveillance cameras and extra police officers, new technologies, including facial recognition systems and cameras which can read number plates, have also been incorporated. Furthermore, anti-intrusion systems have been installed in critical areas around the airport. "We have carried out everything which was required of us by the Federal government. However, risk can never be ruled out 100%…", emphasises Arnaud Feist.
