16 Belgians will compete in the WorldSkills 2017

04/10/2017

From the 15th to the 18th of October the WorldSkills 2017 – the Olympic Games of technical professions - will take place in in Abu Dhabi. The “Belgian Team 2017” will participate with a delegation composed of sixteen young people under the age of 23. For the occasion they will be supervised not only by experts in order to guide them, but also by team leaders, translators and former competitors.

In order to represent our country during the WorldSkills 2017, the candidates had to participate in the pre-selection trials of the Belgian Skills Olympics and had to obtain the 3rd place in their own category. After the candidates qualified, they followed two trainings: the first one was organized by the WorldSkills Belgium experts and was rather technical. The second one lasted 48 hours and was oriented towards “soft skills”, that is to say less technical skills, but therefore not less important in a professional context.

Last year during the European Championships, Belgium won 6 medals and 9 rewards. It ended 8th on the list of the 26 participating countries. This year, 51 skill categories are represented in the WorldSkills: our Belgian candidates will compete in 14 categories, among them, the setting of parks and gardens, hair styling, room service and mechatronics.

This WorldSkills competition allows 1300 young people to compete and maybe be crowned the best of their category on a global scale. It is also an opportunity for visitors to discover these professions, too often in short supply.
