Kaaitheater a cultural beacon for 40 years

13/10/2017

Created 40 years ago as an act of rebellion against the ‘rigid Flemish theatre world’, and nowadays a fully-blown arts centre in Brussels. Hugo De Greef founded the Kaaitheater back in 1977. Its jubilee and success are now being celebrated with a taste of everything this cultural temple stands for: book presentations, installations, debates and talks, dance and – naturally – theatre.

Forced Entertainment, who have been a permanent guest performer at the Kaaitheater over the last 20 years, will present a Belgian premiere of Real Magic. The aim in using this British theatre company is to emphasise the international nature of the jubilee. However, the true highlight will be fellow Belgian writer Stefan Hertmans, with the presentation of his new theatre script, Antigone in Molenbeek, just 50 metres from the border of none other than … Molenbeek. Incidentally, later on, the play will be performed in Molenbeek itself. Furthermore, the cultural plans include arty discussions in a pop-up radio studio made of glass and audio portraits featuring relaxing hand massages.

Artistic leader, Guy Gypens, is honoured to join the entire team in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Kaaitheater, as a beacon in both the city and the nation.
